One of the most widely known photographs of Earth, this image was taken by the crew of the final Apollo mission as the crew made its way to the Moon. Dubbed the “Blue Marble,” Earth is revealed as both a vast planet home to billions of creatures and a beautiful orb capable of fitting into the pocket of the universe. NASA
The Blue Marble is a photograph of Earth taken on December 7, 1972, by either Ron Evans or Harrison Schmitt aboard the Apollo 17 spacecraft on its way to the Moon. Viewed from around 29,400 km from Earth’s surface, a cropped and rotated version has become one of the most reproduced images in history. In the original NASA image, named AS17-148-22727 and centered at about 26°19′49″S 37°25′13″E with the South Pole facing upwards, The Blue Marble shows Earth from the Mediterranean Sea to Antarctica. Earth as seen on July 6, 2015 from a distance of one million miles by a NASA scientific camera aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory spacecraft. Credits: NASA
A NASA camera on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth from one million miles away.
The color images of Earth from NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) are generated by combining three separate images to create a photographic-quality image. The camera takes a series of 10 images using different narrowband filters — from ultraviolet to near infrared — to produce a variety of science products. The red, green and blue channel images are used in these Earth images.
Disney is an impact crater in the H-15 Quadrangle of Mercury. It was approved and adopted by the IAU on Dec 19, 2012. Disney is 113 km in diameter. This crater was named after Walt Disney, the American entrepreneur, voice actor, film producer, and animator. Disney is one of many craters named after notable art figures; per the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature, Mercury’s craters are all named after a famous artist, composer, or writer who was influential for more than 50 years and deceased for more than three years at the time the crater was named.
